If you are one of the many people that have developed a loathing for Vista User Account Control (UAC) and find it highly irritating, you will be glad to know that there are 2 easy solutions to turn off the UAC.
For anyone that is not sure what the UAC does – it pops up quite regularly to ask you to confirm if you wish to continue with a certain action. This could be something that could have serious ramifications for a computer if done in error – like changes to the registry, or it could be for something as mundane and non-threatening as trying to change the time on the clock.
The UAC does not state why the action may be risky; it only provides a warning and asks for confirmation. Not everyone likes this Vista interference and would rather be left to do as they please, without being asked to answer to the UAC every 10 minutes. To disable the User Account Control, you can either:
- Go into the Control Panel and select User Accounts. Then select “Turn User Accounts Control on or off” – amusingly, you will now be confronted by a UAC prompt, asking you to confirm the action. Click Continue and you will be taken to another screen, you need to uncheck “Use User Account Control to protect your computer”, then click OK. The computer will need to be rebooted for this change to take effect. (WARNING: This fix is only advisable for administrator accounts as it will turn off UAC for everyone and can cause issues for normal user accounts).
- The second fix requires downloading a free utility called TweakUAC. Once installed, all you have to do is select Switch UAC to quiet mode and it’s done. This program can disable the UAC for administrator accounts without affecting normal user accounts.
The User Account Control can be very annoying at times and many people choose to disable it. Caution should be advised if you are not very good with computers but enjoy clicking on files and folders you know nothing about, or if you make a habit of trying to install unverified programs without knowing what they do. Otherwise, feel free to turn it off.
