Law Enforcement and the Internet

Many law enforcement agencies are using the Internet and Internet searches to catch criminals. Using every tool available, law enforcement agents are guaranteed to have a more successful investigation. Old-fashioned police investigating is not outdated, however, with new technology available, law enforcement agents can take their investigations above and beyond what they used to be able to do. With the use of history checking and Google searches, police are able to identify criminals and have the correct evidence to convict such criminals.

Police can also use the internet to directly catch criminals, such as using fake child pornography or pedophile websites to attract and catch sexual offenders. These types of websites set up a fake child, who is usually an adult, who engages in sexual conversation with a willing adult who thinks they’re talking to an actual teenager or child. Many people believe this is a fantastic way to catch sexual offenders and others think that it is a way of leading adults into a sexually explicit conversation with a minor. The truth of the matter is that both of these suggestions are the case.

Alternatively, police use the computers of criminals or suspects to see what they may have been searching for or downloading to facilitate their crime. The history on computers can be a valuable tool when investigating the searching history of a suspected criminal. If a history has been wiped out, police can contact the actual search engine company and request search histories for the IP address that the criminal’s computer uses to log onto the internet. IP stands for Internet Protocol and is a unique identification number for each computer when it surfs the Internet. Law enforcement agents can identify the computer with the specific IP and detect where a criminal has been via the Internet.

Searching the Internet may seem like a smart idea for criminals, however, there are so many technological advances that it makes it nearly impossible to stay anonymous while surfing the web. Simply deleting your search history or the cookies on your computer is not enough to protect your web viewing history from someone who really wants or needs to see it. For the average person, there is no need to worry about police hacking into your computer. On the contrary, it should actually make you feel safer that criminals Internet use can be monitored so closely.

One way to look into a criminal suspect’s computer is by remote surveillance. This type of monitoring happens when police officers are stationed right near the suspect’s home. Being able to tap into the criminals system, the police can see everything that person is typing and searching for. Repeat offenders or extremely dangerous criminals can actually have their computers tapped with electronic devices. When a computer is tapped, everything the criminal searches for, looks at, types, or listens to can be seen by police officers. Law enforcement agents can tap the computer of someone who they also suspect of a severe crime.
